Was a legend - had to travel the world just to see the places he talked about.
He was that 'one' teacher that made a real difference.
Mr Rankin was one of my best teachers while i was at Napier boys and actually use to let me read his news paper while i was in the hostel.
Apart from having a fear of technology, the best history teacher at NBHS, possibly the Bay.... Tales never get old
Top stuff - I had Philip I von Rankin around '86-90. He was a sound monarchist, an ardent historian and has great sense of humour. He is Her Majesty's humble servant and his students' master.
I never liked Rankin for a start, but came to realise that his sense of humour and whimsical nature were just beyond me up untill 6th form. Intelligent and eccentric but good teacher/ hostal master
by far the most entertaining and fun teacher in my time at NBHS. From being in his tutorial class to history class it was awesome, Cheers Phil
severely caned a pupil on his first day teaching at NBHS in 1972
talks to much about the history of things, but it wastes time good on him
Needs to lighten up. Drowns on. Generally sound of voice is boring.
